The cathedral of Palma rises above the harbour, and behind the city the island opens into stone villages, olive and almond terraces and the long ridge of the Serra de Tramuntana. On the coast, rocky headlands in the north-west give way to softer, sandy bays in the east and south. Mallorca suits a quiet week as well as a lively family summer.
